Child in trouble scam

Dad, I can't access my account. Can you transfer me some money?

A suspicious message can be the first sign of fraud

Cybercriminals have perfected their tactics to impersonate a family member. With a simple message, they make you believe that your child is in trouble and needs money, and they ask for an immediate payment via bank transfer or Bizum.

It's time to put on your detective hat and analyse every detail. Below, we'll show you how scammers work and how to avoid falling into their trap.

How is this fraud carried out?

0
You receive an unexpected SMS

The scammer impersonates a child or family member and sends a text message saying they've lost their phone or changed numbers. They then redirect you to WhatsApp, where the deception continues.

What to do? Verify the unknown number before replying.

1
The conversation on WhatsApp

Once on WhatsApp, the cybercriminal acts urgently or even makes veiled threats to cause concern. Avoid giving personal data and never answer calls from unknown numbers.

What to do? If in doubt, call the relative at their usual number.

2
The request for money

The scammer requests an immediate transfer under the pretext of an urgent expense. To sound credible, they use excuses such as buying a computer, investing or unexpected payment.

What to do? Be wary and confirm before acting.

3
They disappear without a trace

Once the cybercriminal gets the money, they sever all communications. If the victim tries to restore contact, the messages are unanswered.

Pro tip: If you are asked to make additional payments to unlock the money, it's a scam.

Recommendations to avoid falling into the trap

Confirm the sender's identity

Contact your relative by some other means to make sure the sender is really who they claim to be.

Be cautious of urgent messages

Pressure and urgency are the tools of the trade for scammers.

Never share personal details

Don't reveal confidential information or make transfers without verifying the request.

Do you think you may have been a victim of a scam?

Scams are often disguised as emergencies or threats. Be especially wary of any urgent requests for details or payments.

Keep calm, use your common sense, and if you think you might be a victim of fraud, get in touch with CaixaBank immediately through the official channels: Wall or by calling 938 87 25 25.
