What is PSD2 and how does it protect your security?

The European Payment Services Directive (PSD2) requires banks, such as CaixaBank, to apply procedures to verify your identity and ensure the validity of payment methods. This improves the protection of your accounts and cards against fraud.

When does this verification apply?

We will ask you for confirmation in the following cases:

  • When you log into CaixaBank using a device or browser not associated with your profile.
  • If you change your connection or haven't logged in for a while.
  • When making payments or transfers from CaixaBank.
  • When using your card in online stores, especially when the POS terminal requires additional validation.
  • If you make several contactless purchases in a row without using the PIN, the POS terminal may ask you to insert the card and enter the code.

How does CaixaBank confirm your identity?

The reinforced authentication system combines:

  • Your personal password.
  • A second factor: signing from your device or a code sent by SMS to your mobile.

How can you stay in control?

In the "Security" section of the "Personal Settings" section of the CaixaBank website or app, you can:

  • See the devices paired to your account.
  • Unlink those you don't use or recognise.

  • We may also send you alerts if we detect unusual activity in your account or cards.

Never lose control

We will let you know If we detect situations that may affect your online account or your cards. We will use the channel best suited to the type of alert: SMS, email or push notifications.

Plus, in the "Cards" tab, in the "Consultations and procedures" section, you can:

  • Limit the use of your cards at ATMs, online shops or in certain sectors.
  • Block them temporarily if you need to.

Keep your contact details updated

We need you to keep your mobile number and email address updated so you can continue banking normally. You can update them from the CaixaBank website or app:

  • Go into the "Settings" section.
  • Go into "Modify my personal details".
  • Edit your phone numbers and email addresses.

The regulation also offers you benefits, such as:

  • Unconditional refund of bills in the first 8 days after they are debited.
  • Response to your complaints within 15 business days (up to one month in exceptional cases, with an explanation of the reason).
