The myth of the padlock

Don’t trust the padlock when browsing, as this symbol does not guarantee that the website is legitimate.

What does the browser padlock really mean?

The padlock icon next to a web address (HTTPS) is shown when the site has a digital security certificate. This certificate ensures that the connection between your device and the website is encrypted, meaning that your data is transmitted in code and protected from third parties.

This helps protect the transmission of your information but it does not mean that the website is trustworthy, legitimate, or free from fraud.

Why can't you rely solely on the padlock?

A fake, professional-looking website, padlock included, can be created in minutes.

The padlock has become a symbol of a reliable website, but that's just an illusion.

Anyone, even a cybercriminal, can get a digital certificate so that their website starts with HTTPS, and thus displays a padlock.

What types of malicious websites use padlocks?

  • Fake websites of banks or payment services that imitate the real ones.
  • Fraudulent online stores that disappear after charging you.
  • Fake sweepstakes or promotions that ask for your personal data.
  • Links that install malware on your device when you click on them.

Key tips for spotting a truly trustworthy website

Like any good digital detective, you need to look beyond the padlock:

Check the link carefully

A single letter can make all the difference.

Don't rely just on the design

Scammers copy logos and styles to appear legitimate.

Don't enter personal or banking details

If you're asked for them, be suspicious, whatever the reason.

Tips for safe browsing

0

Type the website's address yourself, especially if you're going to enter sensitive data, or use the official app.

1

Avoid clicking on links in suspicious emails, messages or banners.

2

Use an updated antimalware to help you identify dangerous sites. Remember that antimalware is necessary, but not infallible.

3

Have a questioning attitude: remember that looks aren't everything.

Do you think you may have been a victim of a scam?

Scams are often disguised as emergencies or threats. Be especially wary of any urgent requests for details or payments.

Keep calm, use your common sense, and if you think you might be a victim of fraud, get in touch with CaixaBank immediately through the official channels: Adviser Space or by calling 938 87 25 25.
