Romance fraud

When deception hides behind trust.

An apparent love story can conceal a scam

Romance frauds are emotional scams that take place in digital environments. Cybercriminals create fake profiles on social networks or dating apps to gain the victim’s trust and, once the relationship is established, ask for money under various pretexts.

Although the bond may seem real, it's all part of a manipulative strategy designed to obtain financial gain.

How do cybercriminals act?

0
Creation of the fake profile

The scammer uses attractive photos and a convincing personal story. They typically present themselves as someone living abroad or in a complicated situation that justifies a long-distance relationship.

1
Building emotional trust

For weeks, or even months, they maintain regular, caring and attentive contact. The aim is to create a deep emotional bond.

2
A financial emergency appears

Once the relationship is established, the scammer introduces a serious situation: a medical emergency, a legal problem or an inability to return to the country. The request for money is presented as a personal favour.

3
Request for transfers or payments

The money is requested through transfers, digital platforms or even cryptocurrencies. If the victim accepts, it's common for new excuses to appear in order to continue asking for financial help.

Warning signs of this fraud

  • The relationship progresses quickly, with intense displays of affection from the very first conversations.
  • They avoid video calls or repeatedly postpone meeting in person.
  • They always have excuses for not being able to travel or meet physically.
  • At some point, they ask for money due to an unexpected emergency.
  • They use emotional arguments or guilt to apply pressure.

How can you avoid becoming a victim of this false love story?

  • Use common sense and don't rush into sending money if someone you met online asks urgently.
  • Don't share personal or banking information or compromising images.
  • Speak to someone you trust if you suspect the relationship is not entirely clear.
  • Cross-check information or images using search engines to detect fake profiles.

If you think you may be a victim of a scam, act quickly.

Scams often disguise themselves as urgent situations or threats. Be especially wary of any urgent requests for details or payments.

Keep calm, use your common sense, and if you think you might be a victim of fraud, get in touch with CaixaBank immediately through the official channels: Adviser Space or by calling +34 938 87 25 25.
