Deepfake: what it is and how to avoid it

Appearances can be deceiving, and cybercriminals know it. Thanks to AI, they have perfected deepfakes (altered video, image or voice files) to make them look completely real. Detecting fraud isn't always easy, but with the right tools and a questioning attitude, you can avoid falling into the trap.

What is a deepfake?

Is everything we see or hear real?

When artificial intelligence perfects cyberscams

A deepfake is an artificial intelligence technique that combines deep learning (deep learning) and fake (false) to create manipulated content.

Why are deepfakes dangerous?

  • It can generate false videos of directors or CEOs announcing fake news.
  • It can manipulate financial markets or spread misleading information.

How to detect a deepfake

Discover the keys to identifying it

Identifying a deepfake isn't always simple, but there are key signs that can help you spot one. No single sign is conclusive on its own. The key is to combine awareness with critical thinking, and always cross-check information with reliable sources before accepting it as true.

  1. Deformed face or body

Odd proportions or bad alignment are a warning sign.

  2. Irregular blinking

If the person in the video blinks rarely or unnaturally, it could be a deepfake.

  3. Unnatural facial details

Blurry edges, overly smooth skin or stiff expressions may indicate manipulation.

  4. Unreliable source

If the content comes from an unknown or unverified source, be wary.

  5. Duration of the video

Deepfakes are usually short, so longer videos are more likely to be legitimate.

  6. Detection tools

There are programs for analysing videos to look for deepfakes, although none are 100% guaranteed.
